This was the third of Joan Beber’s plays that we had a hand in managing, and the second directed by
Katrin Hilbe.
Set in an NYC rehearsal room, the play journeys into the life of a passionate artist, Julie, who explores the many divergent paths of her past. From her fractured relationship with her identical twin Jane, to love affairs, questionable parenting skills, and her time as a political activist -- she strives for something beyond our boundaries, reaching for art as the ultimate expression of meaning.
The playwright was tapping into something quite personal here, writing a play about her identical twin who died when the two were very young. The play almost takes the form of a letter, as the playwright, through the character of Julie, reaches out to gain some closure with her lost twin.
“Touching moments and beautiful singing….The acting is exceptionally good”
– Reviews Off Broadway
“A wonderfully authentic gathering of actors getting ready to rehearse a play.” — — Front Mezz Junkies
“Well-acted, emotionally-charged drama.” – Theatre Is Easy
“In her play, Dear Jane, Joan Beber digs bravely into her relationship with a deceased twin sister. Seamlessly directed by Katrin Hilbe, Dear Jane visualizes the playwright’s reflections on her life in the shadow of death. Three generations materialize as a collage of impressionist recollections. Both script and production subtly remind us that Ms. Beber is a visual artist.” – Berkshire Fine Arts
