Doctor Faustus
by Christopher Marlowe
presented by the liminal stage and The Culture Project
featuring John Gould Rubin, Erik Jensen and Christopher Cook
at The Culture Project, NYC
Our most ambitious of the liminal stage projects, we teamed up with Allan Buchman and the Culture Project to present Doctor Faustus with a cast of 8. We brought in many actors outside the ‘liminal’ company, including John Gould Rubin, with whom I had met at The Long Wharf Theatre, when I met assisting John Tillinger in directing As You Like It.
Rubin was tasked at playing the role of Faustus with Erik Jensen as Mephistopheles and Chris Cook as Lucifer. I had come up with a concept for the show that incorporated parts of Goethe’s Faust and I confess only partially worked. There were some marvelous theatrical moments in the show, especially the scene where Faustus signs his pact “with the Devil” but it didn’t quite all come together… this is one of those shows that I would dearly like another crack at. I have thought about how I would restage this one for years.
These rehearsal photos (by Kathryn Gamble) are the only record of the show that still exist.
