East 10th Street - Self Portrait With Empty House was created by the brilliant poet, playwright, performance artist and actor, Edgar Oliver. I had the pleasure of working with him on Carl The Second, where he played the mercurial figure of Captain Ahab, always in the shadows trying to save Carl from his darker angels.
Here, Edgar steps fully into the spotlight, in a show that Ben Brantley of The New York Times called “the sweet and sinister memoir written and performed by Mr. Oliver… a living work of theater all by himself.”
The show did brilliantly in its New York premiere at the Axis Theatre, directed by its Artistic Director, Randy Sharp. When Randy approached me to help her get the show to Edinburgh, I enlisted the help of Richard Jordan, our English producing partner whom I had first met when we produced Shylock. Richard takes a dozen shows to the Fringe every season, and there are few who know more about the festival than Richard.
Receiving 4 and 5 star reviews at the Festival, East 10th Street went over exceedingly well. The Independent called the show “appallingly funny, oddly loving and, in the end, hauntingly forlorn” and The List called “a humorous, fantastical portrait of his life.”
