directed by David Elliott and George Demas
presented by Pam Carter and Cliplight Theater
with George Demas as Welles and Stephen Pilkington as Frank Beacham
at The Connelly Theatre, NYC
George Demas called me about co-directing his play, Maverick, which he had co-written with Frank Beacham. George and I have been friends for many years - and we had worked previously when I helped produce Marc Palmieri's play Carl The Second that George directed. We had since discussed the idea of me directing him several times so when this opportunity arose, I was eager to accept it. I had always wanted to direct George, and him taking on the role of Orson Welles was simply too good to let pass by!
The play draws on Beacham's experience of working with the legendary Orson Welles creating a one-man television special with Welles in 1985, the final year of the great man’s life. As George was playing the lead role, the lion’s share of the directing work fell to me - our collaboration on his piece was harmonious and led to many heady nights discussing the play into the wee hours).
It was a wonderful company of actors and the Connelly Theatre was the perfect venue to showcase the play.
