They say that comedy is tragedy plus time. After over 100 days of Trump, the creators of 2006’s acclaimed musical revue Bush Wars decided that after the 2016 election, the time was right to produce their new show, Me the People - The Trump America Musical. It was an uproarious entertainment that took aim “at the topsy-turvy presidency of Comrade Donald J. Trump.” From his Crony Cabinet, to his Supremely Radical Court, White House grifters Ivanka and Jared and of course, the Trumpcare debacle, no one is spared. Me the People also offers a hilarious diagnosis from Sigmund Freud and a tour de force earful from Hillary Clinton.
I had worked several times with Jim Russek, who has been a theatre ad-man for years, creating the ad campaigns for most notably, The Exonerated, in 2002. It was a pleasure to work with him as a producer.
The critics loved it, saying:
“With Me the People: The Trump America Musical at the Triad, every cloud has a spangled lining. Political quick takes in the style of “Forbidden Broadway.” Call it “Forbidden Beltway.” ....The performers — Aiesha Dukes, Mitchel Kawash, Richard Spitaletta and Mia Weinberger — are fizzy delights. the audience got to its feet, lustily singing along to the salty lyrics as they lofted martinis.” - The New York Times
“The show’s not a wallow in news you might prefer to escape from. It’s a triumph over it, a proudly indecent bleat for decency, the marriage of pop hits and Trump slams a defiant reminder that none of us are alone in our disgust. The climax, a profane singalong I won’t spoil, is all jubilant catharsis, audience and cast answering Trump’s obscenity with one of our own.” - The Village Voice
“Something funny is happening on the way to the coronation. Me The People, conceived by Jim Russek, Nancy Holson, and Jay Falzone, is an uproarious take on the craven, self-dealing Trump agenda intent on tearing apart our government and building a stupid wall. The show delivers a topical, up-to-the minute mockumentary of red-white-and-orange America. You don't need to be a nasty woman, a Mexican or a Bernie-bro to find cathartic laughs in this 90-minute tonic for your 2016 election hangover.” - Broadway World
